Mineral elements - metals

Trace mineral elements, also known as heavy metals, are naturally present in the environment (air, water, soil). They are likely to be found as residues in human/animal food due to their presence in the environment (agriculture, industry or contamination after storage or processing). The accumulation of heavy metals in the body represents a high risk for health. In order to protect the health of the consumer, the legislator has made available to conformity assessment bodies a legislative text allowing them to rule on the safety of a food product. This is the Joint Order of the Minister of Health, the Minister of Industry, the Minister of Trade and Crafts, the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Equipment and the Environment of 13 May 2013 laying down the list of maximum limits for certain contaminants in foodstuffs and the sampling and analysis methods for official control. In the European Union, Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 establishes maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs, in particular for lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. The control of residues of chemical elements in food of animal origin is included in Directive 96/23 /EC.

Our experiences:

  • The metals laboratory of the center of TUNIS has an experience of more than 20 years.
  • It participates in the inter laboratory comparison network: FAPAS and BIPEA since 2009
  • The heavy metals laboratory has been accredited since 2009 by COFRAC and then by TUNAC.
  • it regularly monitors the quality of the results using certified reference materials.

Type of Products:

Metal analyzes are carried out on all products (raw materials or finished products) intended for human or animal consumption and in the waters:

  • Products of animal origin: milk and derived products, meat and meat products, fish and seafood, honey, etc
  • Plant-based products: Cereals and derivatives, oils and fats, raw and processed fruits and vegetables, sugar, etc..
  • Drinks
  • Food and industrial salts
  • Food for animals
  • Raw materials for pharmaceutical industries
  • Drinking and waste water

Type of Analysis

The laboratory specializes in the determination of the following major metallic trace elements and mineral elements:

  • Arsenic: As; Mercury: Hg;
  • Lead: Pb; Cadmium: CD;
  • Chromium: Cr; Aluminum: Al
  • Tin: Sn; Cobalt: Co;
  • Antimony: Sb; Silver: Ag
  • etc.,...

Park Equipment

The laboratory uses different methods for the detection and quantification of minerals and heavy metals:

  • SAA-FLAMME
  • SAA-ELECTROTHERMIQUE
  • SAA-VAPEUR FROIDE
  • ICP-OES
  • DIRECT MERCURY ANALYSIS

Our skills :

  • COFRAC then TUNAC accredited laboratory since 2009
  • Accreditation number: 1-0002
  • Scope of Accreditation: Technical appendix ortunac.tn
  • Intercomparison trials: FAPAS-BIPEA
